Letting gravity lead the way
Poor Man’s Downhill, or PMD, is a local treasure for mountain bikers of all abilities seeking gravity-fueled excitement! In the winter, PMD is part of a community-connector snowmobile route that takes riders into the Taylor Pond trail network north of Wilmington and beyond. Once the snow melts, the section of trail between Route 86 in Wilmington and the toll gate on the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway becomes a shuttle mountain biking dream come true! Grab a friend and coordinate a shuttle.
Mountain biking
The trail descends 1,200 vertical feet over 3 miles. The first mile between the trailhead and the Atmospheric Research Station road is the most technically challenging section, and is often wet in the early season. After crossing the paved research station road, jump back into the woods for some fast singletrack, and watch out for deep water bars! Continuing down the mountain, the trail gradually looses elevation while passing through open hardwoods, hemlock stands, and over flowing and fast natural terrain. You’ll soon cross a popular hiking trail for Esther and Whiteface mountains, so watch for hiker traffic. Continue down the hill, crossing several bridges and private property. Be sure to follow the signs and stay on the trail. You’ll exit the woods behind Up A Creek restaurant and The Great Outdoors gift shop on Route 86. This property owner has graciously allowed for parking where the trail exits the woods. If you park here, please leash your pet, leave it cleaner than you found it, and watch out for the poison ivy along the creek! The North Pole Resort and Campground has also helped to make this trail possible. Don’t hesitate to stop in and say "thanks” to these local businesses!

Skiing
The trail is shared with snowmobiles in the winter, but doesn't see much motorized traffic. See more details about cross-country skiing PMD.
How to get there
Head up the Whiteface Memorial Highway off of Route 86 from the four-corners in Wilmington. The trailhead is 2.7 miles from the intersection on the left. A vehicle can be parked here if space allows. If not, parking is available a short distance up the road at the Whiteface Memorial Highway toll gate.
